What Is Cambridge Mechatronics?

Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd (CML) is a high technology engineering company based in Cambridge, UK. We specialise in developing cutting-edge mechatronic platform technologies, and working with manufacturers to mass-produce products that incorporate our technologies. We protect our intellectual property, primarily via patenting our inventions, and licence our technology and IP to our manufacturing partners. Our mechatronic platform technologies are highly multidisciplinary and comprise mechanical designs, electronics, control circuitry and software. That's why our team of engineers, technicians and scientists hail from a variety of different technical backgrounds, and many have degrees from world-class universities or considerable relevant experience in industry. We specialise in designing actuators that utilise smart materials, such as shape memory alloy (SMA) materials. Our SMA-based actuators are used to control, move and position objects with exceptional accuracy. We use SMA wires as single piece motors that are around the size of a human hair, and are able to reliably control their movement with sub-micron accuracy. We are the only company in the world to master the use of SMA materials and we have developed and patented a variety of SMA-based actuators that may be used to provide auto-focus and optical image stabilization in cameras, more accurate 3D-sensing, haptic devices, drug delivery devices and surgical instruments. To date, we have licensed our technology and patents related to our SMA-based actuators to five licensees that include one of the largest providers of components to camera and smartphone handset manufacturers and the world's leading smartphone manufacturer.
